Dear Motorscooter Enthusiast!

The Vespa Club of America (VCOA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to collecting, restoring and preserving European motorscooters. Since approximately 70% of the scooters sold in the United States were Vespas, most members are Vespisti. However, many also like Lambretta, Heinkel Tourists or Zundapp Bellas. Today the VCOA also serves as gathering place for people to share their interest in the modern Vespa models and other European-derived scooters such as the Stella and Bajaj. The VCOA’s primary focus will always be the Vespa scooter but we welcome anyone interested in scooters and scooter riding.

Joining the VCOA is a great way to find support for your interest in scootering. We are a club of over 2,400 past and present members in the USA and overseas. One of the club’s aims is to build and support a community of scooter enthusiasts. Once a year the VCOA publishes a membership directory of all active members. The directory is a great resource for finding fellow scooterists all over the world. Some members will even begin to offer travel support and local technical help. (See below for more details.)

Membership also includes a subscription to our club magazine, American Scooterist, which is published four times a year.

American Scooterist is open to contributions from all members. The magazine prints articles on all topics of scooter enthusiasm: historical, technical, member profiles, scooter events and tales of member’s scootering adventures.

To join, send a $25 check ($35 for overseas memberships) payable to the Vespa Club of America to:

Membership participation

As one way to help strengthen the community of VCOA members, the club is starting a new category of membership. Under your name in the membership directory you can have printed different codes that represent the way you chose to participate in the club.

You can include the codes listed below to describe your level of involvement with the club. For example: Would you like to offer fellow club members technical assistance? Travel support? Or just be there for friendly conversation if someone is passing through town? Let us know.

This idea is openly borrowed from the BMW Motorcycle Owners Association (BMW-MOA). The BMW-MOA publishes the Anonymous Book. Within this book are addresses and phone numbers of club members around the country. Someone touring on a motorcycle can use this information for all levels of assistance. Over the years it has proved to be a fantastic service for BMW owners. It has helped motorcyclists on long rides and built a very real community of enthusiasts.

With the arrival of the Vepsa GT200 and other maxi-scooters, scooter touring may make a revival. We would like the VCOA membership directory to be a resource for adventurous scooterists. Maybe you would like to visit with other scooterists who are traveling through your neck of the woods? If you are traveling to a different part of the country, you don’t need to be on a scooter to use the directory to meet other people with scooters. The codes should work on a regional level as well. Use them to find scootering support, fellowship and/or technical assistance in your local area.

Codes:

CC Coffee and Chat
RA Regional Ambassador (approved by the board)
C Camping/tent space
R/F Spare room/floor space
SS Storage space
M Mechanical help
WT Working tools
D# Distance will travel to help
D? Distance depends on situation/time
WS Space to work on scooters
ST Shade Tree mechanic
LC Contact for Local Clubs

Common sense and courtesy should always be the rule with the use of this code system. Please do not abuse the good will of your fellow members! The directory isn’t intended to be a moochers guide. We recommend using e-mail as the most respectful form of initial contact. This guide is merely a service to help scooterists contact one another. The VCOA cannot be responsible for how other people get along with each other.

If you are new to scootering and/or do not choose to participate, you can always leave the code category blank. If you are particularly curmudgeonly and private, you can also choose to not have your name/contact information printed in the directory, just make a note of it on your membership application.

Happy scootering!
